Watch Weird Al, Ben Folds Audition for ‘Star Wars’ Cantina Band
The Star Wars Cantina Band could really swing, but what other worthy alien bands make up the Tatooine music scene? Thanks to the web site CollegeHumor, we now know the answer – and it’s a pretty mixed bag. Partnering with LucasFilm and YouTube, the goofy viral-video mainstays imagine what the Cantina Band audition process was like, brining along icons like Rick Springfield (err, Rick Forcefield), Ben Folds and Liz Phair.

First up is rocker Chris Daughtry as “Chris Darthry,” a Satanic metal Sith Lord who channels the grandiosity of Ronnie James Dio with a hellish acapella try-out. “I will embrace the dark side with all the anger inside,” he squeals. “I’ll make the Jedi pay and spread the pain across the galaxaaaaay!” Meanwhile, Ben Folds (BF1138) takes a more low-key approach, teasing a blues-piano jam called “I Shot an Ewok, Baby.”
Alt-rock icon Liz Phair delivers an acoustic protest ballad about the Death Star – a bad move. “Get off the stage, you tree hugger!” yells a bartender, as the singer’s pulled from the stage by a team of Storm Troopers. Reggie Watts (RG-Watts) appears as a droid-like creature that malfunctions mid-beatbox, while Mark McGrath pokes fun at his surfer-boy image as sand person Muark MCCCCCCCCC’ Wrath, and Jordin Sparks (Jor Din Sparks) unveils her emotive about The Force – as part of “Intergalactic Idol.” (Text “VOTE” to T65-X, by the way.)
Other performers include the previously mentioned Rick Forcefield (who delivers an out-of-tune guitar solo using only The Force), Weird Al (Weird Al Attacka’ Duwacca’) as an accordion-playing food-parody artist, a hologram version of Lisa Loeb and MC Chris as a tragic Boba Fett.
