Kathy Griffin Challenges Nicki Minaj to Butt Contest
Kathy Griffin has issued a challenge to rapper Nicki Minaj – and it involves butts, not ice buckets. “Of course, everyone’s talking about that ‘Anaconda’ video, and it’s fantastic,” the comedian told The Associated Press in a new interview. “It’s a lot of boo-tay, and I would like to challenge Nicki to a boo-tay-off.”
Given Minaj’s posterior pride, Griffin has her work cut out for her: The rapper’s GIF-friendly, twerk-heavy clip for “Anaconda” (which features a sample from Sir-Mix-a-Lot’s ass-shaking anthem “Baby Got Back” and a cameo from Drake, who graciously receives a lap dance) is loaded with shots of Minaj and her dancers’ butts. It’s also, to the surprise of no one, turning a lot of heads: the video has already received 35 million views since its release on Tuesday, breaking Vevo’s record for most views in the first 24 hours.
“It’s like the ice bucket challenge, but it doesn’t have any charity associated with it at all,” Griffin said of her daunting idea. “It’s completely gratuitous.”
“Anaconda” may or may not be featured on Minaj’s upcoming LP The Pinkprint, which is still without a release date. Earlier this year at the BET Awards (while accepting her trophy for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist), she promised that the album would be out in 2014.
The rapper has released two other singles so far this year. First came “Lookin’ Ass,” which took a more critical angle on booty flaunting, as she literally and figuratively shot butt-gawking males in the video. The second was the unexpected hate-the-haters ballad “Pills N Potions,” which was accompanied by a video that featured Minaj beheading fellow rapper the Game.
