Lykke Li Looks Stunned in ‘Love Me Like I’m Not Made of Stone’ Video
Lykke Li wants what every red-blooded human being wants: to be treated as something more than an object. Nevertheless, her video for “Love Me Like I’m Not Made of Stone” – a new song off her third album, I Never Learn, which comes out May 6th – presents her as a traumatized museum piece, a would-be Venus de Milo spinning on a turntable, looking sullen, moving only her eyes. She doesn’t even lip-sync to the lyrics. Judging from the song, though, this is more because she’s feeling damaged by a broken heart.
Spring Music Preview 2014: Lykke Li’s I Never Learn
Musically, the track sets Li’s plaintive, citrusy voice against a slowly strumming acoustic guitar as she sings sadly about feeling heartbroken and, of course, wanting to feel like a person. Earlier this month, she told Rolling Stone that I Never Learn contains “power ballads for the broken” and this track seems to embody that definition.
The Swedish-born Li recorded the nine-track LP – which she announced previously with a teaser video that included two minutes of the song “I Never Learn” – in Los Angeles with co-producers Björn Yttling and Greg Kurstin. She says that the album concludes a trilogy that began with her debut, 2008’s Youth Novels, and continued with 2011’s Wounded Rhymes.
In addition to releasing I Never Learn in May, Li has planned two U.S. shows that follow a string of European dates. She will perform at New York City’s Apollo Theatre on May 15th and at Los Angeles’ Theatre at the Ace Hotel on May 19th. Tickets to both shows go on sale Friday.
