Watch Gwen Stefani, Blake Shelton Cover ‘Hotline Bling’ on ‘Fallon’
Jimmy Fallon and The Voice judges, Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani and Pharrell Williams, brought all the endearing awkwardness of spin the bottle to a new musical version, “Spin the Microphone,” on The Tonight Show Monday.
Instead of teens sucking each other’s faces, the host and coaches took turns spinning a microphone and challenging each other to sing a song. Still, there was plenty of scheming, squealing, cringing, backstabbing and, ultimately, one conversation about erections. And despite the credentials of all four judges, getting them to perform under pressure turned out to be more difficult than expected.
Levine slouched through Britney Spears’ “Oops!… I Did It Again,” but never hit a flat or sharp note, while Shelton, with amicable resignation, put a little more chutzpah into the Village People’s “Y.M.C.A.”
Pharrell then kicked off the duets round, enlisting Fallon for a raspy, raucous rendition of Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock’s “It Takes Two.” Stefani, who hadn’t performed yet, closed out the game by default, but she used her duet card to make Shelton suffer one more time: While the No Doubt frontwoman nailed the hook of Drake’s “Hotline Bling” with all the right hype, Shelton leaned down to intermittently spit into the microphone, “Bling… bling.”
