John Oliver on Donald Trump: ‘I Couldn’t Give Less of a S–t’
Two former Daily Show correspondents reunited Wednesday on The Late Show as Stephen Colbert was joined by Last Week Tonight host John Oliver. Before Jon Stewart left The Daily Show in July, he expressed regret that he was departing as Donald Trump‘s political popularity was ascending. (Colbert too overindulged on Trump during his premiere Late Show episode.) Oliver, however, has a different attitude toward the Republican frontrunner. “I couldn’t give less of a shit. It’s physically impossible,” he said of the mogul.
It’s not that Oliver won’t care eventually, but right now it’s too soon and there are too many other issues to be concerned about than the candidate whose hair “is made of cotton candy,” as Colbert said. “Because it’s the 2016 elections. And it’s 2015 right now. So I don’t care until we’re in the same year as the thing I’m supposed to care about,” Oliver told Colbert. “That’s the beauty: We’re on half an hour a week, we don’t have to care about the election. There are plenty of problems that they might want to talk about other than themselves.”
Oliver and Colbert both reminisced about their former boss Jon Stewart –”I miss him hugely. I love that man,” Oliver said – and then briefly praised Trevor Noah’s debut as the new Daily Show host. “He did great, but he’s taking on the impossible. You can’t replace the irreplaceable,” Oliver said, to which Colbert, David Letterman’s Late Show successor, quickly quipped, “I wouldn’t know what that’s like.”
After the Colbert interview, Oliver “signed” the Late Show‘s video guestbook, where the Last Week Tonight host expressed he was disappointed to learn that Colbert’s new show was all CGI:
