The Hold Steady Return to Brooklyn for ‘Frighten You’ Video – Premiere
On their most recent album Teeth Dreams, the Hold Steady reflect on middle age, channeling their jubilant rock & roll energy toward the daily disappointments of adulthood. Opening track “I Hope This Whole Thing Doesn’t Frighten You,” for instance, finds frontman Craig Finn reuniting with long-lost hometown buddies who haven’t quite outgrown their trouble-making ways, and fittingly, the song’s music video (which we’re premiering here today), was shot this past February at the Music Hall of Williamsburg, where the band played a special show to celebrate its tenth anniversary.

With its frenetic talk-singing verses and explosive chorus, guitarist Tad Kubler thinks “I Hope This Whole Thing Didn’t Frighten You” has the potential to be a classic. “The song has all the critical elements that are the foundation for every great Hold Steady song,” he tells Rolling Stone. “There’s the pulsating drive of the rhythm section and the interplay between [guitarist] Steve Selvidge and I, with Finn spitting and snarling about good people making bad choices, stumbling through darkness in search of something bigger and brighter.”
Despite the lyrics of the song, which he describes as being “about having old friends that you currently find a bit scary,” Finn himself gets a touch sentimental when describing the video, recalling that “captures a special night in Brooklyn.”
