Jeff Tweedy and Son Debut ‘World Away’ at Tour Kickoff
Jeff Tweedy and his son Spencer kicked off the Tweedy tour at Detroit’s Masonic Temple on Thursday night by debuting a bounty of songs fresh off their new album, Sukierae. As Billboard reported, the pair opened the set with 14 never-before-heard songs, which the Wilco frontman joked was “a colossally ignorant thing to do.” A fan caught one of the new tracks, “World Away” on video.
Earlier this week, Tweedy released “I’ll Sing It,” the first single off Sukierae. The album marks Tweedy’s first full-length record since Wilco’s 2011 The Whole Love. Tweedy also explained in a press release how his 18-year-old son happened to be playing drums on his “solo” debut:
“When I set out to make this record, I imagined it being a solo thing, but not in the sense of one guy strumming an acoustic guitar and singing,” Tweedy said. “Solo to me meant that I would do everything – write the songs, play all the instruments and sing. But Spencer’s been with me from the very beginning demo sessions, playing drums and helping the songs take shape. In that sense, the record is kind of like a solo album performed by a duo.”
