Watch Arcade Fire’s Frenzied Trailer for ‘Reflektor Tapes’ Film
“Sound is happening all around you, and notes and rhythms are happening all around you,” Arcade Fire ruminate in their official trailer for The Reflektor Tapes, a documentary tracing the creation of the Canadian band’s 2013 LP, Reflektor. Khalil Joseph, the filmmaker who won a Special Jury Prize at the 2013 Sundance for his psychedelic Flying Lotus video “Until the Quiet Comes,” directed the film, which hits North American theaters for a limited-time screening on September 23rd. Showtimes and ticket information are available now.
According to a description on the film’s website, The Reflektor Tapes “re-contextualizes the album experience, transporting the viewer into a kaleidoscopic sonic and visual landscape.” Joseph blends interviews and performance footage, following the band as they record in Jamaica and Montreal, play an impromptu show at a Haitian hotel during Carnival and tour behind the acclaimed LP. Reflektor ranked Number Five on Rolling Stone‘s list of 2013’s 50 Best Albums.
The film has been confirmed for inclusion in the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, making its worldwide premiere on September 12th. The Reflektor Tapes will include a brand new, previously unreleased track, along with 15 minutes of unseen footage exclusive to cinema audiences.
Last month, Arcade Fire released a “First Look” trailer for the film, along with an eight-minute clip focusing on Reflektor track “Porno.” That scene weaved footage from the band’s Haiti visit with experimental visuals and shots of the band members wearing massive papier-mâché heads.
In May, members Win Butler and Régine Chassagne announced plans to open a Haitian restaurant, Agrikol, in Montreal. Two months earlier, the couple teamed with an eclectic group of music stars to announce their investment in Jay Z’s headline-making streaming service, Tidal.
