Watch Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic Play Lorde’s ‘Royals’ on Accordion
Lorde had better buy a box of tissues. Less than a week after the teen pop singer reported that Bruce Springsteen‘s cover of her song “Royals” at a New Zealand gig made her “teary,” Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic has gone and done the same thing – only this time on accordion. Performing with a small ensemble, he managed to turn the song into a very chill music experience.

According to the YouTube poster who uploaded the video, the performance took place at Republic in Takoma Park, Md. this past Sunday. The Nirvana member performed with D.C.-area groups the Cowards Choir and the Beanstalk Library and made the appearance in support of the Fair Vote campaign.
Since the end of Nirvana, Novoselic has dedicated much of his musical time to playing accordion. He played the instrument on Foo Fighters‘ 2011 track “I Should Have Known” and in 2012, he told Rolling Stone that he had spent much of the previous year learning how to play the Doors‘ “Light My Fire” on an accordion that Kurt Cobain had given him. He even tried to make the accordion his instrument when he teamed with Dave Grohl and Paul McCartney on their Sound City track “Cut Me Some Slack.” “I wanted to play accordion, and everyone was ‘Nooo,'” Novoselic said to Rolling Stone.
Lorde is currently touring in support of her debut album Pure Heroine, which recently surpassed one million copies in sales. She kicked off the North American leg in Austin earlier this month.
