In the clip above, the pair talk about the sudden success of the producer’s solo cut, “Happy,” which became a massive chart success following its unique 24-hour music video. The video led to an ensuing onslaught of videos from fans across the world in which they filmed themselves dancing to the track. Pharrell chokes up after Winfrey plays a handful of those clips, before managing a rhetorical: “Why am I crying on Oprah?” “It’s overwhelming because it’s like, I love what I do and I just appreciate the fact that people have believed in me for so long that I could make it to this point to feel that,” added the producer.
“Happy” originally appeared on the soundtrack for Despicable Me 2, before eventually popping up on Pharrell’s new solo record Girl. Both the track and album kept the pop maestro’s 2013 momentum — from hits like Daft Punk‘s “Get Lucky” and Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” — moving into this year, where’s he’s already picked up four Grammys, scored an Oscar nod, performed on Saturday Night Live and even kickstarted a new headwear trend.
