Camera2 Curb Their ‘Appetite’ – Premiere
Camera2‘s “Appetite” is a song about abandoning hedonism. The Brooklyn group, which includes Andy Chase, who has produced tracks for Smashing Pumpkins and Tahiti 80, formed in mid-2012 after Chase decided to stop reveling in the party scene. “Appetite,” the first song off the band’s debut EP of the same name, documents the change.
The 25 DJs That Rule the Earth
“I was disgusted at some point in my life about my lack of self-control and inability to curb my appetite for all things seemingly hedonistic,” Chase tells Rolling Stone. “This song was an antidote to my frustration.”
Despite his dedication to abstention, on the track he draws decadently from multiple genres. A starry, electronic fill opens the track before a powerful, robotic drumbeat pushes the song forward. Then the electronic side of the group is countered by both an indie-rock falsetto chorus and guitarist Michael Jurin’s ambient guitar techniques. The result is a group that is neither purely electronic nor rock, but somewhere indefinably in between.
The video, directed by David Dutton (who has made videos for Bassnectar and the Limousines), acts a metaphor for Chase’s growth. A young boy wanders an abandoned, post-apocalyptic city. During his drifting, he engages in bizarre behavior, including eating light itself and powering a mechanical band (that looks just like Camera2) with the ingested light. According to the band, the songs on the upcoming EP will each have an associated video, further following the youth’s travels.
Appetite will be released February 11th.
