Phil Collins Mulling a Musical Comeback
Phil Collins is contemplating reviving his long-dormant music career. “I have started thinking about doing new stuff,” he said at the premiere of the Tarzan musical in Stuttgart, Germany. “[Maybe playing] some shows again, even with Genesis. Everything is possible. We could tour in Australia and South America. We haven’t been there yet.
Phil Collins on His Alamo Obsession and Retirement
The singer hasn’t released an album of original material since 2002’s Testify. He supported it with the “First Final Farewell” tour, and in 2007 he reunited with Genesis for a successful 47-date tour of Europe and North America. He fulfilled his Atlantic record contact in 2010 with the Motown covers album Going Back and has been largely absent from the scene ever since. Nerve damage has made it virtually impossible for him to play drums, and in recent years he’s spent much of his time curating a highly-impressive collection of artifacts from The Alamo.
In a 2012 interview with Rolling Stone, Collins said that a new record was “very unlikely” and a tour was “even more unlikely.” “At some point I may go down to my studio in the basement and muck about some,” he said. “I’ve got a couple of things that I think are great, but I don’t want to get caught up in that rock & roll promotion thing. And I have young children, so I don’t feel the drive to go out there and compete.”
His children are a little older now and Collins says they are encouraging him to get back into music so they can see him perform.
Rolling Stone reached out to Collins’ manager Tony Smith for a statement about the singer’s future plans. His response: “No definite plans at this time.”
