Black Flag Bassist Dave Klein Quits
Black Flag bassist Dave Klein announced his exit from the band on Facebook, the same day that Rolling Stone broke the news that the band had a new frontman. “After today’s news out of the ‘Black Flag Official’ camp,” he wrote. “I guess I should OFFICIALLY (puns!) say that I’m no longer playing with BF.” Klein then directed readers to a Dying Scene article that said he would be returning to the punk band They Stay Dead.

Black Flag’s former vocalist, Ron Reyes, whom the band fired onstage mid-concert in November, commented first on the Facebook post. “God help their poor new bass player if they didn’t have the heart to go through with their plans to turf that old drummer,” he wrote. Reyes had previously complained about drummer Gregory Moore’s ability in his own Facebook announcement.
Last week, Black Flag manager and pro skateboarder Mike Vallely told Rolling Stone that he had assumed the legendary hardcore band’s frontman position. He said that since the dismissal of Reyes, the band had been recording new material and had planned on launching a tour around May. Among other things, he said he hoped to make Black Flag concerts more fun. “There are a lot of songs like ‘TV Party’ and ‘Six Pack’ that are fun, fun songs,” he said. “You’re allowed to smile. It’s OK.”
