Jacqueline Bisset Delivers Golden Globes’ First Viral Moment
After a lengthy, surprisingly slow ascent to the microphone, British actress Jacqueline Bisset delivered an acceptance speech at the Golden Globes that was just as lengthy – and surprisingly slow. Visibly emotional, the 69 year old, who won best supporting actress for the TV miniseries Dancing on the Edge, took her time finding the right words in the most awkward way possible.

“I think it was 47 years ago that the Hollywood Foreign Press gave me the promising newcomer,” she said, thanking the organization behind the Golden Globes. Then she paused to refocus. “God knows you’ve nominated me about five times.” Then she waited again. “OK,” she shouted. “Scottish background to the front.” But it didn’t stop there. She kvelled about how she wanted to do something for the BBC then she got to do this; she called out for her costar Chiwetel Ejiofor; she completely ignored the music indicating it was time to go. Perhaps the biggest head-scratcher was just before she finally said goodbye: “I believe if you want to look good you’ve got to forgive everybody.” OK.

“I’ve been waiting for a Jacqueline Bisset podium stroll since she was Rob Lowe’s mom in [the 1983 film] Class,” tweeted Rolling Stone’s Rob Sheffield. “Jacqueline Bisset is so unchartered right now. . . but so bittersweet Liberace didn’t live long enough to see Jacqueline Bisset’s speech.” And after she completely ignored the music cue, he added, “It’s taking so long for these people to reach the stage they’re having to ‘play them on.'” After that, it just became a running joke. “Commercial break, or, ‘4th time re-watching Jacqueline Bisset.'” And of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros frontman Alex Ebert’s Best Original Score acceptance speech, “This is like Bon Iver’s Grammy speech remixed by Jacqueline Bisset.”
