Kanye West Vents About Grammy Nominations
It seemed inevitable, really, that Kanye West would grouse about only getting a pair of Grammy nominations, and the rapper devoted part of what has become a nightly freeform rant onstage to that very topic last night in Phoenix.
“Yeezus is the top one or two album on every single list,” he said at US Airways Center, according to an Instagram video captured by radio station KISS-FM. “But only gets two nominations from the Grammys. What are they trying to say?”

West’s latest LP is nominated for Best Rap Album, and his song “New Slaves” is up for Best Rap Song at the 56th Grammys, which will take place on January 26th in Los Angeles. Though the rapper has won 21 Grammys so far in his career (out of 53 nominations), last night was not the first time he’s expressed frustration with the Grammys – and plenty of other awards shows, stretching back nearly a decade.
“If I don’t win Album of the Year, I’m gonna really have a problem with that,” West said before nominations were announced in 2005. Although his album Late Registration was a contender in that category (one of eight nominations he received that year), U2 won for How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb.
West is already at work on the follow-up to Yeezus, saying last week that his next album will consist of eight songs. The rapper is said to be working with Rick Rubin and Q-Tip on the project.
