‘Westworld’ Questions Reality in First Teaser Trailer
HBO has unveiled the teaser trailer for Westworld, their serialized remake of the 1973 film about a fantasy theme park populated by humanoids that turns against its guests. HBO describes the show’s eight-episode first season as “a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the future of sin,” and that theme is explored in the teaser as an unseen inquisitor asks in the trailer, “Have you ever questioned the nature of your reality?”
The 30-second clip offers up glimpses at many of the series’ stars after hell has broken loose at Westworld. Evan Rachel Wood appears to be a robot named Dolores, as she’s unbothered by a fly on her forehead and blood on her cheek. Anthony Hopkins plays Dr. Robert Ford, likely the humanoids’ inventor, while Jeffrey Wright is seen quickly honing a flashlight among a cavern of humanoids. However, the big reveal is the split-second look at Ed Harris, who will reprise the ominous Gunslinger famously portrayed by Yul Brynner in the 1973 version and its 1976 sequel Futureworld.
James Marsden, Thandie Newton, Rodrigo Santoro, Clifton Collins Jr. and Ben Barnes will also appear in the show.
The original film was written and directed by visionary author Michael Crichton, but the remake boasts some similarly impressive talent behind the camera. Jonathan Nolan, who penned films like The Dark Knight and Interstellar alongside his brother Christopher Nolan, will write and direct the Westworld series, while J.J. Abrams and the late Jerry Weintraub are on board as producers.
Westworld will premiere on HBO in 2016.
