Surfer Blood Bust Out ‘Prom Song’ Live – Premiere
Surfer Blood sacrifice the cowbell for this acoustic take on “Prom Song,” which was shot for their own episode of At: Guitar Center with Nic Harcourt. According to frontman John Paul Pitts, there were other challenges in revising the track – which can be heard in its original, electrific form on the West Palm Beach trio’s new album, Pythons.
“We weren’t sure if the change in instrumentation would affect the mood of the song, plus we were missing our drummer that day,” Pitts tells Rolling Stone. “Luckily, our bassist Kevin Williams stepped in to play drums and carried the rhythm section single-handedly. In the end, the result was something that exceeded our expectations, losing some of the atmosphere but maintaining the character and color of the track.”

Harcourt agrees that the song was a success, adding, “It was exciting to see this song performed stripped back to its basics, allowing us to hear an entirely new side of the song. That is what this podcast series is all about – showing bands in a new light and giving fans an insight into the songwriting process.”
On a related note, Surfer Blood – who are fresh off their appearance at Riot Fest Chicago last week – will return to the road for a three-week run of U.S. dates next week. That trek gets underway at Terminal West in Atlanta on September 29thand wraps at Denver’s Larlmer Lounge on October 16th.
