Afghan Whigs Plan ‘Beast’ of a New Record, First in 16 Years
Three years after reuniting, brooding rock brood the Afghan Whigs today announced their first record since 1998’s 1965. The album, whose unwieldy title Do To the Beast might or might not warrant a (sic), will come out on April 15th. The date lands between the band’s performances at Coachella on consecutive Fridays, April 11th and 18th.

Prior to the official announcement, actor Bob Odenkirk of Mr. Show, Breaking Bad and eventually Better Call Saul fame leaked the news in a tweet. “The great Greg Dulli of whom I am a fan tells me new Afghan Whigs album coming soon,” he wrote. He punctuated his tweet with the exclamation, “Kickass,” and a selfie of him with the head Whig.
Dulli and the rest of the Afghan Whigs launched their reunion tour with a New York City gig in 2012. Later that year, he told Rolling Stone the regrouping was going well. “Like life, [there have been] good times and bad times. But that’s the way it is in any band. Everybody’s cool, and honestly, we’re having a good time. I don’t do things that aren’t a good time, not anymore. I don’t have to.”
In other recent Dulli news, the singer joined forces with Steve Kilbey, frontman of the Church, with whom he has been writing music and playing live. Last October, the duo played their first performance together, a 75-minute set of songs by the Church, the Whigs and Dulli’s Twilight Singers. “Steve picked my songs, and I picked his songs,” Dulli said.
