Avicii’s ‘Hey Brother’ Gets a Dirty Drop
Avicii‘s recently-released debut album True bends EDM into new shapes, boldly taking the club genre into bluegrass and roots territory. (Recall “Wake Me Up,” which Avicii controversially debuted with a live band at Ultra Music Festival last spring.) True‘s latest single, the twangy opus “Hey Brother,” features vocals from Dan Tyminski – best known for singing “I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow” in O Brother, Where Art Thou? – and is one of the record’s most progressive cuts, straddling country and EDM.

Now, Estonian up-and-comer Syn Cole has given the dance floor track a party boost. Cole, who’s previously released music on Avicii’s label and remixed the famed producer (see his slinky edit of “Silhouettes,” which was released as a single last summer) adds his signature house feel to the electro-Americana original. Keeping Tyminski’s vocals perfectly in tact, the “Hey Brother” remix grows dancier as it plays, building with streaky synths and a disco thump.

While Avicii has talked about moving away from “the dirty drop” on this album, his early fans and EDM purists will appreciate the massive drops Cole has carved out on his rendition. The producer tells Rolling Stone, “Ash, Avicii’s manager, pitched me this project and I instantly felt that this was an opportunity to create a more Syn Cole style of sound.”
