Watch Jeremy Renner Sing Hawkeye Ode on ‘Tonight Show’
When compared to Captain America’s superhuman strength, Thor’s all-around godliness and the Incredible Hulk’s metamorphosis, Hawkeye’s marksman role in the Avengers amounts to little more than “dude with great aim.” Jeremy Renner is well aware of his character’s cool factor shortcomings, so he visited The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to sing an ode to his superhero to ensure that he gets a little more respect before Avengers: Age of Ultron opens in theaters May 1st.
To the tune of Ed Sheeran’s smash ballad “Thinking Out Loud,” Renner’s Hawkeye sings, “But listen I’ve got powers too, they’re pretty sweet / I promise I can do so much more than just archery.” Hawkeye then rattles off all the impressive, forgotten feats he has accomplished: “I kick ass at Mario Kart / This year I played an extra in Paul Blart / I can open a pickle jar / I’m friggin’ Hawkeye / Maybe I’m as super as they are.”
While Hawkeye’s role was marginalized to an unwilling villain in the first Avengers, director Joss Whedon told Rolling Stone that the archer’s screen time and storyline will be expanded in the sequel. “There’s stuff between Hawkeye and the Scarlet Witch that’s some of my favorite stuff in the movie, and it’s there because they’re the only actors I had,” Whedon said. “When we started shooting in Italy, I had Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, and Jeremy Renner; everybody else was busy. So, I’m like ‘Okay, I guess these guys are gonna have a scene, and I can work with that.'”
