New ‘Southpaw’ Trailer Shows Off Jake Gyllenhaal’s Ripped Physique
Jake Gyllenhaal packed on 15 pounds of muscle for his role in Southpaw and a new trailer for the film shows all that power put into use with intense training sequences set against the searing family drama.
The Antoine Fuqua-directed film stars Gyllenhaal as Billy “The Great” Hope, a left-handed boxer nearly undone by the death of his wife. As he fights for custody of his young daughter, he tries to get his life and boxing career back in order with the help of a former boxer played by Forest Whitaker. The film also stars Rachel McAdams, Rita Ora and noted boxing fan 50 Cent.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Fuqua discussed Gyllenhaal’s training regimen and explained why the fighting in his film might look a bit more realistic than in a typical boxing picture. “I’ve never seen a boxing movie shot the way I shot this one,” he says. “This one, you’re watching people getting punched in the face. The camera’s not cutting all the time. You’re watching people getting punched, and blood come out of their mouth. That’s part of what I was training Jake to do, which is, ‘We’re going to watch you fight.'”
The new trailer, the second released for the film, features a longer taste of the pounding new Eminem track “Phenomenal,” which the rapper dropped as a single on June 1st. The rapper is the executive producer of the film’s soundtrack, which will be released by Shady Records. He was originally set to star in the film back in 2010 but ended up pulling out in order to focus on record The Marshal Mathers LP 2. “Eminem has dedicated himself to ensuring that this film captured his passion for the project through his music,” Shady Records president Paul Rosenberg said in a statement. “We’ve assembled a great soundtrack to accompany what’s sure to be one of the finest boxing films ever.”
