Listen to Lera Lynn’s Sparse, Spooky Song for ‘True Detective’
On last year’s The Avenues, Lera Lynn crooned her way through a moody mix of Americana and throwback pop, swirling up a sound that owed as much to Patsy Cline’s classic twang as Raymond Chandler’s noir screenplays.
Appropriately, she’s now contributing music to the second season of HBO’s True Detective, whose first episode premiered on Sunday night. Lynn’s “The Only Thing Worth Fighting For” appeared earlier this year via the show’s trailer, while a new track, “My Least Favorite Lie,” hit iTunes this morning. Both songs were co-written by Lynn, T Bone Burnett and Rosanne Cash, with Burnett pulling double-duty as producer.
Stark and spooky, “My Least Favorite Lie” was recorded minutes after the song was written in Burnett’s Los Angeles studio, with Lynn’s voice and electric guitar serving as the only instruments. By contrast, The Avenues was a dense album, couching its melodies in layers of pedal steel and brushed percussion. Stripped bare, though, her voice still resonates.
Lynn, whose makes a cameo appearance in next week’s True Detective episode, will open a pair of concerts for Sheryl Crow in early July, in addition to headlining her own string of shows throughout the summer. She’ll also perform at the Americana Music Association’s annual festival in September.
