Watch Eminem, Yelawolf Praise Spiritual ‘Best Friend’ in New Video
Alabama rapper Yelawolf released his second major label album Love Story on April 21st, and now the Eminem protégé has unveiled the music video for the standout single “Best Friend,” featuring Eminem. The soulful, southern-fried cut finds Yelawolf and Eminem rapping in praise of a higher power they call their “best friend.” Keeping with the single’s spiritual elements, we see the two rappers delivering their verses in houses of worship as sunlight pours through stained-glass windows.
“To the Father, Son and Holy Spirit / I hold you nearest / My best friend,” Yelawolf sings on the chorus of a track more in tune with Kid Rock than “Daddy’s Lambo.” Eminem’s fiery, death-defying verse is also packed with religious iconography, shout-outs to dead rappers like Notorious B.I.G. and Proof and a boast that Eminem is “the Iggy Pop of hip-hop.” “Shout it out like there’s never been a louder mouth / Should have never been allowed a mouth,” Eminem says, “Now that I got a higher power / Now when I blackout, power outage / They powerless, but they crowd around /They tend to flock like shepherds.”
Eminem’s verse on Love Story is the lone guest feature on Yelawolf’s new album. “There’s one feature on this album, and that’s [Eminem],” Yelawolf told Complex. “Why am I gonna get such-and-such? For what? Hype? I’m just trying to make a good record.” Love Story was released on Eminem’s Shady Records and Interscope, and the label boss himself served as executive producer on the 18-track LP.
