See Jared Leto’s Menacing Joker in Eerie ‘Suicide Squad’ Trailer
Jared Leto‘s grotesque take on the Joker provides a menacing high point in the trailer for the upcoming super-villain flick Suicide Squad. The preview, which made its way online after debuting at Comic-Con, shows the green-haired goon holding a dastardly-looking tool and saying, “I’m not going to kill you. I’m just gonna hurt you really, really bad.”
The rest of the trailer sets up the plot for the highly anticipated flick, which is due out August 5th, 2016 and finds a band of baddies from the D.C. Comics universe who are forced to carry out black-ops mission with the hope of getting clemency. The cast’s notable antiheroes include Batman staples Harley Quinn (played by actress Margot Robbie), Enchantress (Cara Delevingne), Deadshot (Will Smith) and Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), among others. Ben Affleck, who’s set to portray Batman in next year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (see that movie’s trailer here), will also portray the Dark Knight in Suicide Squad.
The trailer begins with Waller bragging that she’s finally assembled “the worst of the worst,” and she goes on to suggest that they’d make a good task force, ensuring that she can control “the most dangerous people on the planet” to do some good. “Getting people to act against their own self-interests is what I do for a living,” she brags. The clip then shows the villains coming together as Harley Quinn sings the Bee Gees’ “I Started a Joke,” making for a fitting lead-up to Leto’s character.
The movie’s director, David Ayer (The Fast and the Furious, Fury), previously shared a first look at Leto in makeup in April via Twitter. “The Suicide Squad wishes you a Happy Anniversary Mr. J,” he wrote, referencing the 75th anniversary of the Joker’s first appearance in a comic book.
