Carrie Underwood to Perform New NFL Sunday Night Football Theme Song
Sunday will mark a big night for Carrie Underwood. While the country superstar has given countless major performances for thousands of adoring fans, Sunday’s spectacle will reach a whole new audience. The multiple-Grammy Award-winning singer will put her own spin on the theme for NBC’s “Sunday Night Football.”
Underwood takes over the duties from another country bombshell, Faith Hill, following her retirement earlier this year after performing the song for the last five seasons. Underwood said she was “thrilled” and “honored” that NBC was passing her the baton.
“I have always loved football season,” she said. “It is so exciting to now become part of it every Sunday night!”
NBC told Our Country earlier this year that Underwood was their “first and only choice” for the role following Hill’s departure. In fact, Underwood was one of their original choices back in 2006.
Not surprisingly, the former “American Idol” put her own spin on the theme, “Waiting All Day For Sunday Night,” which is set to the tune of Joan Jett’s classic tune, “I Hate Myself For Loving You.” “It’s the same song, same lyrics, but it’s going to be with my flair,” Underwood explained to Our Country in May.
In a teaser clip of the song, it sounds like it’s going to be a more guitar-heavy, rockin’ version of the tune.
Underwood seems extremely eager to kick off her new regular gig. She enthusiastically tweeted this morning: “It’s here! @nfl Season #Kickoff2013 Starts today. Who is as ready to go as we are?”
The season kick-off airs Thursday night on NBC, with defending Super Bowl championship team Baltimore Ravens visiting the Denver Broncos. Weigh in following Underwood’s performance and let us know what you think of her rendition!
