Additional performers include Patti Smith and Her Band, the National guitarist Bryce Dessner, Tibetan singer-songwriter Techung and composers Nico Muhly and Philip Glass.
Last year’s benefit concert featured musicians Patti Smith, Tenzin Choegyal, Tune-Yards, Jim James of My Morning Jacket, Ariel Pink and Rahzel, as well as This American Life host Ira Glass. “When you get to the point where people are lighting themselves on fire just to protest, it seems like it’s a very horrible place to live,” Tune-Yards bassist Nate Brenner told Rolling Stone last year. “We just wanted to do what we could to raise awareness of it.”
Proceeds from the evening benefit the Tibet House U.S., which is a nonprofit educational institution that is dedicated to preserving the Tibetan civilization with a cultural center, gallery and library. It was founded in 1987 at the request of the Dalai Lama.
