Bill McKibben to Be Honored With Lifetime Achievement Award
Environmental activist and Rolling Stone contributor Bill McKibben will be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s 23rd Annual Environmental Media Awards on October 19th.
McKibben will be recognized alongside actors Matt Damon and Hayden Panettiere for their own commitment to the environment at a ceremony taking place at Warner Bros. Studio in Burbank, California.

McKibben has made a career out of caring for the environment, writing The End of Nature in 1989, which many call the first book on climate change for a general audience. McKibben is also President and co-founder of the grassroots organization 350.org, which organizes rallies and advocates for CO2 reduction in the atmosphere.
“It’s a real honor to receive this award,” McKibben said in a statement. “Political change often follows cultural change; we owe real gratitude to those in the media world raising the profile of our most serious issue.”
In the past, McKibben has written at length about the environment in the pages of Rolling Stone, including an in-depth piece last summer about the new math of global warming — and its terrifying consequences. He’s also written about backlash against the Keystone pipeline, rapid ice melting in the Arctic, fossil fuel divestment and more.
Previous recipients of the EMA’s Lifetime Achievement Award include Ted Turner, Kelly Meyer and Trudie Styler.
