While EDC New York went off without a hitch last year, EDM festivals came under increased scrutiny after two attendees died of drug overdoses at New York’s Electric Zoo, forcing the festival to cancel its final day. Pasquale Rotella, CEO of Insomniac, the promotional company behind EDC and Nocturnal Wonderland, addressed the controversy, telling Rolling Stone he thought dance music was being unfairly targeted.
“I think the general public thinks maybe this only happens at festivals, dance music events – that it doesn’t happen at college frat parties, house parties, sporting events or rock festivals because it’s not covered, basically,” he said. Dance music gets national interest. And sometimes, like EDC Downtown (Los Angeles), it gets international interest.”
Still, in the wake of these incidents – two people died after EDC Las Vegas sets ended in 2012 – expect this year’s EDC New York to feature extra safety precautions: “We do everything that needs to be done and we’re proud of it,” Rotella said, “and we will continue to improve our operations as new methods of keeping these events safer are available.”
