MTV: Daft Punk Chose to Skip ‘Colbert’
The drama over Daft Punk‘s planned, then canceled, performance on The Colbert Report continues, with MTV claiming the French electronic duo chose to skip the show, contrary to Colbert’s assertion that the music channel forced Daft Punk to cancel over contractual issues relating to the Video Music Awards.
“We don’t put restrictions on anyone. I just think that we’re talking to them about a moment and then things sort of change,” VMA executive producer Jesse Ignjatovic told The Hollywood Reporter. “I would not describe that as MTV putting restrictions on people – it was up to that artist and their management what they wanted to do.”
The 25 DJs That Rule the Earth: Daft Punk
Daft Punk were scheduled to perform on The Colbert Report on August 6th, but canceled at the last minute, supposedly because of a conflict in their contract with MTV for a surprise performance at the VMAs later this month.
Colbert recently described the irksome details that went into arranging for the reclusive duo to appear on the show, and described revising the script to ease Daft Punk’s discomfort at elements of the planned episode.
Daft Punk are now scheduled to make their first television appearance since the release of Random Access Memories at the MTV Video Music Awards on August 25th, when Kanye West, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke are also set to perform.
