Pixies’ New Video Connects Graffiti Artists With Astronauts
The video for “Greens and Blues,” a track off Pixies‘ latest release, EP-2, tells a last-man-on-Earth story, but finds its protagonist to be the last slacker on Earth. Throughout most of the clip, the man – played by Mel Rodriguez (Panic Room, Little Miss Sunshine) – walks around with a can of spray paint trying to figure out what to do with his time. In one scene, he spends his time sitting in a spotlight shaking the can down by his crotch in a curious way. In another, he dives into a green ocean and nearly reenacts the cover of Nirvana‘s Nevermind. A blue astronaut visits him, but despite the premise, there is no Twilight Zone or Planet of the Apes-like twist.
The 10 Best Pixies Songs, as Chosen by Rolling Stone Readers
“I felt like we needed a better ‘Gigantic,’ basically,” frontman Black Francis commented on “Greens and Blues,” while referring to a past Pixies song, in a statement. “It was my attempt to come up with another song that would – musically, emotionally and psychologically – sit in the same place that ‘Gigantic’ has sat. I think the lyric alludes to the fact that it’s the end of the night, the end of something. . . So I guess it’s kind of a goodbye song. A goodbye song, but really more of a ‘goodnight’ song.”
The group announced the four-track EP-2 in early January. Although the band has undergone some notable lineup changes in the bass department, including the departure of founding member Kim Deal and her recent replacement Kim Shattuck (A Perfect Circle four-stringer Paz Lenchantin now plays in Pixies), the recordings feature Simon “Ding” Archer on bass.
