Broken Bells Tease New Music in Sci-Fi Short
With their second album officially on the way, Broken Bells – the project of Shins frontman James Mercer and producer Danger Mouse – have released a new short sci-fi film that features a tiny bit of new music from After the Disco.
Only snippets of new Broken Bells tunes appear in the Jacob Gentry-directed short, which follows Oliver (Anton Yelchin), a tired, lonely suit who drifts off after a long day at the office and finds himself transported to a strange planet. There he encounters a battered, abandoned astronaut, Helen (House of Cards‘ Kate Mara), and the two spark a romance as they traverse the curious terrain.

The video ends on a cliffhanger, after a pink fractal orb (ostensibly the same one that appeared on the cover of Broken Bells’ 2010 debut) interrupts the new lovers’ intergalactic makeout sesh and lures Oliver away.
Never fear, a part two is imminent. The most sizable chunk of new Broken Bells music plays over the credits and scenes from the short’s second half, which looks like it will feature more danger, romance, intrigue and perhaps slightly more sizable turns from Mercer and Danger Mouse (you can catch them starring in the low-budget alien flick Oliver dozes of to at the beginning).
While there’s no official release date for After the Disco just yet, the album is set for release in January 2014.
