Wanda Jackson’s enticing and mysterious take on the White Stripes‘ “In the Cold, Cold Night,” which premieres here, is the first single from Rockin’ Legends Pay Tribute to Jack White, a new collection due on November 19th. The Queen of Rockabilly’s rendition of the Elephant track, which boasts inventive musical accompaniment by Shooter Jennings, is one of 14 songs from White’s canon interpreted by favorites from the formative years of rock, rockabilly and punk.

“Jack is such a talented songwriter, and a lot of his songs are done in a much different style than my own,” says Jackson, who teamed with White for her 2011 solo album, The Party Ain’t Over. “But when I heard “Cold, Cold Night” for the first time I knew it was a song that I wanted to record some day. When the opportunity came around to pay tribute to Jack on this album I thought it was the perfect opportunity to lay it down in the studio. Shooter came in and played piano and later added all of the other instruments. I’m very pleased with how it turned out and I hope Jack approves of the job we did.”
For Jennings’ part, he says, “Working with Wanda was certainly a highlight of my career just in theory alone, but getting to know her and Wendell [Goodman, her husband and manager], and having intimate time with them recording her vocal, as well as the freedom to take the track home and take it where I wanted it to go, was beyond special. I love Wanda as an artist, as a person and now, as a friend, and feel very luck to have collaborated with her on a collection honoring one of my favorite modern artists.”
Aside from Jackson, Rockin’ Legends Pay Tribute to Jack White also features Big Jay McNeely and Nik Turner (“I’m Shakin'”), Gary U.S. Bonds (“Salute Your Solution”), Sonny Burgess and the Legendary Pacers (“Steady As She Goes”), Joe Clay and Cranston Clements (“Trash Tongue Talker”), Robert Gordon and Chris Spedding (“Another Way to Die”), Knox, Walter Lure and W.S. “Fluke” Holland (“Seven Nation Army”), Johnny Powers (“Fly Farm Blues”), Bobby Vee (“We’re Going to Be Friends”), Rosie Flores (“Blunderbuss”), the Dirt Daubers (“Fell in Love With a Girl”), Rejected Youth Nation feat. Cyril Neville (“You Don’t Know What Love Is (You Just Do As You’re Told)”), the Denver Broncos U.K. (“Top Yourself”) and Los Straightjackets (“Icky Thump”).
