Can ’12 Years’ Sweep the Golden Globes?
American Hustle and 12 Years a Slave lead the Golden Globes field with seven nominations each for the 71st annual awards, including nods for best picture in their respective categories, Best Musical or Comedy and Best Drama. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the nominees this morning in Los Angeles with help from Aziz Ansari, Zoe Saldana and Olivia Wilde.

In addition to best picture, 12 Years a Slave is up for Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama for Chiwetel Ejiofor, Best Supporting Actress for Lupita Nyong’o and Best Supporting Actor for Michael Fassbender. American Hustle is also up for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for Christian Bale and Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for Amy Adams. Bradley Cooper is up for Best Supporting Actor and Jennifer Lawrence is up for Best Supporting Actress. Both movies are nominated for best screenplay and best director.
In Best Motion Picture – Drama, 12 Years a Slave faces Captain Phillips (one of three nods for the Tom Hanks pirate film), Gravity, Philomena and Rush. The other Musical or Comedy nominees are Spike Jonze’s Her, the Coen brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis, Alexander Payne’s Nebraska and Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street.

Nebraska also yielded nominations for Bruce Dern in Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy and June Squibb for Best Supporting Actress. The movie is also up for Best Screenplay.
On the TV side, Breaking Bad is up for three awards: Best Drama Series, Best Actor in a Television Drama for Bryan Cranston and Best Supporting Actor in a Television Drama for Aaron Paul. Downton Abbey, The Good Wife, House of Cards and Masters of Sex are also up for Best Drama Series.

Inside Llewyn Davis, the Coen brothers’ fictionalized look at the Greenwich Village folk scene of the early Sixties, also landed a Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy nomination for Oscar Isaac, and a nomination in Best Original Song for “Please Mr. Kennedy.”
U2 and Coldplay are also nominated for Best Original Song, the former for “Ordinary Love” from Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, and the latter for “Atlas” from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. In addition, Taylor Swift was nominated for “Sweeter Than Fiction” from One Chance.
Tiny Fey and Amy Poehler will host the Golden Globes ceremony on February 12th.
