Best Albums of the 1980s: Richard and Linda Thompson, ‘Shoot Out the Lights’
“Never the Bride” is a wistful folk ballad with measured, gentle vocals and delicate instrumentals; in it, Thompson grows melancholic with cries of “I’m bound to live a single life/ Never, oh never, the bride.” Her character, a consistently heartbroken young woman, longs for “a man with only one side.”
Thompson has a long history of musical expression; she recorded in the 1970s and 1980s with her then-husband Richard Thompson. Their album Shoot Out the Lights was Rolling Stone‘s Number Nine album of the 1980s and is also featured on the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list.
Won’t Be Long Now is due out October 15th on Pettifer Sounds.
