Where Do the Byrds Rank on Our 100 Greatest Artists List?
Alex Scally and Victoria Legrand of Beach House have tapped Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes, Daniel Rossen of Grizzly Bear, Hamilton Leithauser of the Walkmen, Jenn Wasner of Wye Oak and Iain Matthews of Plainsong and Fairport Convention as part of a band and chorus to re-create the ex-Byrds member’s “lost classic” note-for-note onstage. The ensemble will perform four concerts in Philadelphia on January 22nd, Baltimore on January 23rd, Washington D.C. on January 24th and Brooklyn on January 25th. Tickets are available through Beach House’s website, and each show will include a screening of a specially edited version of the documentary The Byrd Who Flew Alone: The Triumphs and Tragedy of Gene Clark.
Clark was a founding member of the Byrds in 1964, writing much of the band’s original early material, including “Eight Miles High” and “I’ll Feel a Whole Lot Better.” He was an on-again, off-again member of the group through 1973. He released seven solo albums between 1967 and 1977, and re-teamed with Byrds mates Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman as a trio in the late Seventies. Clark died in 1991.
