Josh Tillman Makes Magic on ‘Car Chase Theme’ – Song Premiere
Though Josh Tillman is focused on his Father John Misty project right now, the former Fleet Foxes drummer took a break to write the brooding score for The History of Caves, the directorial debut of his wife Emma Elizabeth Tillman. “Car Chase Theme” is a particularly evocative example of how the Record Store Day “Back to Black Friday” exclusive soundtrack recalls the bleak, acoustic-driven music Josh Tillman made when he performed as J. Tillman.

Though the track isn’t nearly as tense and fast-paced as the title would suggest, the uneasy piano chords add an appropriate sense of foreboding. And when it’s least expected, Tillman slips in an alluring organ to change the tenor entirely. “This track is the last variation on the motif I wrote for the soundtrack,” he tells Rolling Stone. “I like the way this one goes from maudlin to sexy with just the addition of an organ stab. Movie magic.”
The History of Caves will premiere later this year on Netflix, Amazon and iTunes. Tillman’s soundtrack will be available on November 29th in limited edition at participating record stores. Tillman recently talked to Rolling Stone about the film, his next Father John Misty album and his acting ambitions.
