Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon Readies Body/Head Double Album
Sonic Youth co-founder Kim Gordon will release a double-album with her Body/Head project with free-noise guitarist Bill Nace late this summer. Coming Apart is due out September 10th on Matador Records, Spin reports. The album will be available in CD and double-LP formats and will be the duo’s most widely distributed collection to date.
The new album marks a departure for the experimentalists whose previous work was primarily instrumental. Coming Apart features vocals from Gordon while staying true to Body/Head’s distinct sound.

“[Her] vocals now have become an intrinsic part of their musical architecture,” reads a statement from Matador. “They have even started writing and playing ‘songs’ now, compositionally distinct from their purely aleatory origins, but still featuring lots of built-in improvisational space.”
Body/Head is Gordon’s “scripted improvisation” project with Bill Nace that began after Gordon and her husband, and Sonic Youth bandmate, Thurston Moore announced their separation in 2011.
“It feels a little like rebuilding or starting over in some way, but I have a whole kind of vocabulary of music and experiences to bring to that,” Gordon said of Body/Head’s new direction. “It’s just music — just more music.”
