On the Charts: Big Sean ‘Blessed’ to Be Number One
On the strength of smash singles “I Don’t Fuck With You” and “Blessings,” Big Sean‘s Dark Sky Paradise soared to the top of the Billboard 200, giving the Detroit rapper his first Number One album. “Thank u guys for an amazing week and giving me my 1st #1 album,” the rapper tweeted. “The support means everything. truly Blessed!” Dark Sky Paradise, which was executive produced and features multiple cameos by Kanye West, sold 173,000 copies in its debut week, Billboard reports.
Kid Rock‘s hook-filled new disc First Kiss entered the charts at Number Two with 146,000 copies sold. Every Kid Rock album has debuted in the Top 10 since his first major label album Devil Without a Cause in 1998, but First Kiss marks Rock’s highest entry since 2007’s Rock N Roll Jesus hit Number One on the Billboard 200.
While Fifty Shades of Grey lost its grasp at the top of the box office, the film’s soundtrack continued to sell well, moving another 108,000 units in its third week. As Billboard notes, with 393,000 soundtracks sold so far, Fifty Shades of Grey is the first movie soundtrack to sell at this pace since the first Twilight film in 2008.
The rest of the Top Five featured Drake’s quasi-mixtape If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late at Number Four and Taylor Swift’s 1989 at Number Five. Last week’s champ, Imagine Dragons’ Smoke + Mirrors, nearly pulled off a disappearing act in which they fell from the Number One spot to out of the Top 10, but the Las Vegas band instead settled at Number Nine. Only one more debut managed to register in the upper echelon of the Billboard 200: Tyga and Chris Brown’s collaborative Fan of a Fan, which landed at Number Seven with 67,000 copies sold.
