The Grateful Dead‘s stirring finale of “One More Saturday Night” asserts that official preservation of the beloved band’s historic August 27, 1972, show in Veneta, Oregon, is long overdue. The Dead’s imminent three-CD/DVD concert release, Sunshine Daydream (due September 17th), was recorded and filmed but has remained officially unreleased for 41 years – until now.

The Veneta gig – notorious among Deadheads – reunited the group with the Merry Pranksters for a benefit, with proceeds then going to the Kesey family’s Springfield Creamery. Considered the last “Acid Test,” Sunshine Daydream features the classic lineup of Jerry Garcia, Donna Jean Godchaux, Keith Godchaux, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh and Bob Weir and counts an epic 30 minute-plus version of “Dark Star” among its many goodies.
Fans will recall that the DVD portion of the project had its special “one night only” theatrical premiere on August 1st, the birthday of the Dead’s late great frontman Garcia. Aside from the standard version, the project will be available in four additional configurations, including an exclusive Dead.net deluxe version available in Blu-ray that adds a bonus documentary about the show and a 40-page book chronicling the event. Audio-only versions include a digital download of the complete concert and a limited four-LP vinyl pressing of the same – both mixed and mastered from the original 16-track tapes.
