John Oliver Unveils Lost Pope Condom Graphic on ‘Last Week Tonight’
The unsung heroes of Last Week Tonight are found in the graphics department. The team cranks out hilarious images on each episode of the HBO news satire, but many amazing images wind up getting cut for space. As a testament to their abilities, host John Oliver rounded up some of the funniest and most bizarre unused graphics from Season Two.
The above web exclusive kicks off with an old classic: Paul Giamatti dressed as a mango, which appeared in the Season One graphics round-up. Other highlights include images of chickens styled with celebrity haircuts (“Hennifer Aniston,” “Heather Flocklear” and “Larry Bird”) and a Pope Francis brand condom, which is “essentially just a wrapper with a wish inside.”
Oliver says he’s amazed some graphics didn’t already exist, like an image of Nicolas Cage accepting a role in fictional film Bark to the Future, “assumedly about a time-traveling puppy or tree.” Others, he says, aren’t real but should be – like a zamboni-ambulance (“zambulance”), a promo poster for fake reality show Real Forklift Operators of Reagan Airport or a birthday card from grandma addressed to “dipshit.”
The most surreal image is prop comic Gallagher smashing a watermelon with the host’s face on it, which came “directly from a nightmare [Oliver] had.”
Last Week Tonight returns to HBO Febuary 14th at 11 p.m. EST.
