Hear Rae Sremmurd’s Punishing New Track ‘By Chance’
Almost a year after Rae Sremmurd released their debut LP SremmLife – Number Seven on Rolling Stone‘s 40 Best Rap Albums of 2015 list – the sibling duo of Swae Lee and Slim Jimmy have unveiled a new song titled “By Chance.” The track, featuring a punishing beat produced by Mike WiLL Made-It and Resource, is currently earmarked for Will’s Ransom 2 mixtape, but Rae Sremmurd also hinted on Twitter that “By Chance” might appear on their upcoming SremmLife 2.
While SremmLife was one of 2015’s more playful, party-minded hip-hop albums, “By Chance” finds Rae Sremmurd navigating a denser, more sinister production this time around. “A Ziploc full of kush / Are you plugged in by chance / A bad bitch with a suntan / Do you know one by chance,” the duo ask on the chorus. “Have you seen the Xan man / have you seen him by chance.”
According to the “By Chance” Soundcloud, both Ransom 2 and SremmLife 2 are “coming soon,” although no official dates have been announced. Rae Sremmurd were the first group signed to Will’s then-newly launched Ear Drummer Records; the Mississippi brothers took their name from the label spelled backwards. Their debut album – which also landed on Rolling Stone‘s 50 Best Albums of 2015 list – boasted the hit singles “No Flex Zone” and “No Type” and guests like Nicki Minaj, Young Thug and Big Sean.
“We kept everything raw with them,” Will told Rolling Stone of the duo. “Their energy is so good and their character is so tight that they can crossover into popular culture easily. I look at them like a hood ‘NSync. It’s like pop, but it’s pop in its ratchet-est form.”
