See Kacey Musgraves and Zac Brown Band’s Hank Williams Jam
The musical paths of Kacey Musgraves and Zac Brown Band have crossed several times since the “Follow Your Arrow” singer made her major-label debut in 2013. The latest collaboration between Musgraves and the country-rockers was a highlight of last weekend’s fifth annual Southern Ground Music & Food Festival in Charleston, South Carolina.
On both dates of the festival, ZBB closed out the show with an epic set that included more than 20 songs each night, some of which teamed them with other acts on the bill. On Sunday, April 17th, after her own late-afternoon turn on stage, Musgraves returned to cover the 1951 Hank Williams classic, “Hey Good Lookin'” with the group.
“We’re gonna do something country!” Musgraves told the crowd, who sang along from the first note. Trading in the short, sparkly dresses from her Country and Western Rhinestone Revue concert dates, the singer donned a basic black t-shirt and jeans and a white cowboy hat, singing the opening verses then letting the band take an extended instrumental break, giving the song a light, Western swing-tinged arrangement.
Hank Williams wasn’t the only artist covered during the Zac Brown Band set. The group also offered up their versions of tunes from bluegrass icon Jimmy Martin, soulful rockers Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, the Beatles, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Led Zeppelin and Queen, among others. On the roster for Saturday’s show, the Marshall Tucker Band performed their tune, “Midnight Promises” with Brown and band.
Just as integral to the show as the music is the food, with most of it supplied by local restaurants and caterers. The Southern Ground food truck features the creations of Brown and executive chef Rusty Hamlin, with several of the bandleader’s recipes handed down from his grandmother.
In January, Musgraves joined Zac Brown Band for the Castaway with Southern Ground at the Hard Rock Hotel in Riviera Maya, Mexico.
