Mystery Deepens in Mayer Hawthorne’s ‘Love Like That’ Video
Mayer Hawthorne is readying the release of his fourth full-length album, Man About Town, but in the meantime he’s serving up some mystery through the album’s songs. In a trilogy of videos, Mayer Hawthorne plays detective in the film noir series. The first chapter of the story came by way of his “Cosmic Love” video and he just released the second installment with the video for “Love Like That.”
The new clip picks up where the cliffhanging “Cosmic Love” left off, which found detective Hawthorne knocked out by an unidentified assailant and there’s a single earring near him, presumably left behind by a mysterious woman who’s the object of his affection. “Love Like That” opens in the aftermath of the attack, with police tape, evidence markers and Hawthorne nursing his head with an ice pack. He then retrieves the single earring by bribing police, who had put it in an evidence bag.
The mystery deepens with new characters added into the mix, one of whom tails Hawthorne as he’s driving before he makes his way to the woman who stars in the first clip. Their romance deepens, too, as the pair spend the night together. “I want a love like that / I want a love / Strong like a heart attack / to fire me up,” he soulfully sings. While he may be lamenting for a strong love, what he gets instead is a gun pointed at him by his paramour after he discovers the second earring is on her nightstand.
“Things really heat up and take a crazy, dark turn in part 2,” he told Billboard of the second video in the series. “It’s the Empire Strikes Back of the trilogy.”
Man About Town will be released via Vagrant on April 8th.
