Watch Ice Cube Play ‘Rap Song or Wrong Song?’ on ‘Ellen’
With his track record as an acclaimed solo rapper and member of N.W.A, you’d think Ice Cube‘s hip-hop instincts would surpass those of daytime talk show host Ellen DeGeneres. But the competition was stiff Wednesday on Ellen as the pair squared off in “Rap Song or Wrong Song?”, attempting to assess the authenticity of rap song titles.
Cube started off strong, correctly selecting “Rap Song” for Yasiin Bey’s (fka Mos Def) “Ms. Fat Booty.” But his success rate plummeted from there, as he issued false answers for “Get Money, Got Money, Lost Money – Ain’t Funny” (not a rap song, though he noted plans to “steal that title” for an original track) and “Who Are the Pimps?” (a real song by Boogie Down Productions).
“It appears I know more about rap than you do,” Ellen jabbed, which motivated Cube – if briefly. Both made the grade on Coolio’s “Kinda High, Kinda Drunk” and the non-existent “Can’t Afford This Cable.” Then Cube trailed off again, blanking on Obie Trice’s “Got Some Teeth” and the fake “Hot Sauce 4 Tha Boss,” which he said “sounds like something from the Dirty South.”
The rapper-actor did sneak in the final victory, calling BS on “He Won’t Do It, But I Sho Did It.”
Ice Cube stars in the upcoming film comedy Barbershop: The Next Cut, which hits theaters April 15th.
