Watch ‘School of Rock’ Musical’s Innovative, Interactive Music Video
The musical adaptation of School of Rock will begin preview performances on Broadway on November 9th, and today, the stage production has offered up a first look at its live incarnation with an innovative, interactive 360 degree music video. Like a Broadway show, where the audiences’ gaze can focus on anything onstage, the video for the musical’s “You’re in the Band” allows users to fully navigate the classroom where the School of Rock group is assembled.
“I am proud that School of Rock is not just the first musical to take this leap into the future, but that this video of ‘You’re in the Band’ is the first time anyone has used the 360 degree medium in this way,” producer Andrew Lloyd Webber said in a statement. “It could open a lot of doors.”
In the video, Dewey Finn, a failed rocker who takes a job as a substitute teacher at a prep school, goes from student to student teaching them their respective instruments. The viewer can either follow Finn around, focus on specific instruments or, perhaps, just stare up at the classroom’s ceiling, which will transform into a “You’re in the Band” lyric video.
While School of Rock – The Musical will officially open at Broadway’s Winter Garden Theatre on December 6th, the music video itself was filmed in a real New York City classroom. “You’re in the Band,” the first single from School of Rock – The Musical, was produced by Lloyd Webber alongside Rob Cavallo, who previously worked on Green Day’s American Idiot. The musical will feature a new score by Lloyd Webber and lyricist Glenn Slater as well as three songs from the original film, which starred Jack Black as Finn.
