Hank Williams Jr.: ‘I Don’t Give a Sh-t About the Election’
Hank Williams Jr. has never been shy about voicing his opinions, especially when it comes to politics. But the self-professed country icon — he wrote a song titled “Dress Like an Icon” for his impressive new album It’s About Time — says he’s focused only on the music these days. Along with his hobbies of hunting and metal detecting for Civil War artifacts.
“‘What about the election?’ they say. I say, ‘I don’t give a shit about the election, I’ve got a smash CD coming out!'” Williams tells Rolling Stone Country.
Williams wasn’t too far off the mark: when It’s About Time was released last month, it debuted at Number Two on the Billboard Country Albums chart, marking the highest chart entry of his career. He’ll hit the road later this month for a string of shows, and unite with Chris Stapleton for a co-headlining run in August. The pairing of the two big-voiced singers has already generated heavy buzz online.
Williams shows off his own bellow on the It’s About Time track “Wrapped Up, Tangled Up in Jesus.” A gospel song made popular by the Reverend Charlie Jackson, Williams says it was Kid Rock who introduced him to the long-lost gem.
“Bobby Rock showed me that song and I said, ‘What? What is that?'” Williams says. “‘I said, ‘You ought to [record] that.’ He said, ‘I can’t do it. . . but you can.'”
It’s About Time is Williams’ first album for the new NASH Icon label.
