Joanna Newsom, Paul Thomas Anderson Video Set for Theatrical Release
The Paul Thomas Anderson-directed music video for Joanna Newsom‘s “Divers,” the title cut from her upcoming new album, will receive a theatrical release on October 16th.
According to Newsom’s label, Drag City, the video will screen through October 22nd in over 50 theaters across the U.S. A complete list of participating venues is available online, with additional theaters set to be announced in the coming weeks.
The “Divers” video was shot in the New York studio of artist Kim Keever and finds the musician stepping inside of her surrealistic and stormy landscapes. Keever also provided album artwork for Divers, and the visuals accompanying the LP’s second offering, “Leaving the City.”
Newsom and Anderson previously teamed up for the “Sapokanikan” clip, the first taste of Divers, which found the musician strolling through New York City and singing the cut into the camera. “Sapokanikan” also marked a reunion with Anderson, as Newsom provided the offbeat narration for his 2014 film, Inherent Vice.
Newsom has also announced dates for her first North American tour in five years, starting December 6th at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston. Newsom will be joined by the duo of Alela Diane and Ryan Francesconi throughout the tour. A complete list of dates is below.
Newsom will release Divers on October 23rd. The album marks her fourth studio effort and first since her acclaimed 2010 triple album, Have One on Me. Divers was recorded by Steve Albini and Noah Georgeson, and features musical arrangements from Newsom, Nico Muhly, Ryan Francesconi and the Dirty Projectors’ Dave Longstreth.
