Hear Willow Smith, Michael Cera’s Dreamy Collaboration
Willow Smith has uploaded a new song to her SoundCloud page with an unlikely producer: Michael Cera. Smith released her debut album, Ardipithecus, last year.
“Twentyfortyeight 2.0” contains a simple, almost lullaby-like beat. Smith sing-talks stream-of-consciousness lyrics above harmonies of hums. “That isn’t genuine,” she says calmly during the song’s last couplet. “That doesn’t/Nurture the human soul.”
Smith recently tweeted about Cera, calling him “extremely beautiful” last week before tweeting out the title of one of his movies, Youth in Revolt.
Cera’s musical output over the course of his career has typically been done as a surprise; in 2014, he quietly released an album lo-fi indie-folk titled true that on Bandcamp. He has also played guitar and performed backing vocals on Weezer’s Hurley. He’s gravitated towards musical roles on screen, playing bassists in both Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist and Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World while also appearing on the soundtrack for Juno where he and co-star Ellen Page recorded a sweet duet of the Moldy Peaches’ “Anyone Else But You.”
