Drake, Meek Mill Trade Disses on New Tracks
Two weeks after the Meek Mill and Drake beef was stirred from its five-month ceasefire thanks to Mill’s “I’m da Plug Freestyle,” the feud is officially back on after both rappers fired new disses at one another with a pair of freshly released tracks.
On Drake‘s OVO Sound show Saturday on Beats 1, the rapper once again took aim at his “Back to Back” target with a new single titled “Summer Sixteen.” “I let the diss record drop, you were standing right below me, nigga / We must have played it a hundred times, you was going to bed,” Drake says on the song. “Why would I put on a vest I expect you to aim for the head / I coulda killed you the first time / You don’t have to try and say it louder nigga / Trust, we heard you the first time.”
“Summer Sixteen” also finds Drake ribbing President Barack Obama for stating that Kendrick Lamar was a better rapper (“Tell Obama that my verses are just like the whips that he in / They bulletproof”) and boasting about his success. “I used to want to be on Roc-A-Fella / Then I turned into Jay,” Drake says. “Now I got a house in L.A., now I got a bigger pool than Ye / And look man, Ye’s pool is nice / Mine’s just bigger what I’m saying.” The track is available to purchase on iTunes.
Soon after Drake premiered “Summer Sixteen,” Meek Mill had his rebuttal all ready to go: Another new surprise EP – this time titled 4/4 Pt. 2 – featuring another Drake diss track, this one called “War Pain.” However, even more unexpected was the fact that Mill’s new song featured the Philadelphia rapper already responding to lines Drake had just premiered on OVO Sound less than a half-hour earlier. As Mill told fans on Instagram, “The ghost writer told me,” hinting he was forewarned about some “Summer Sixteen” lyrics.
Mill’s insistence that Drake employs a ghostwriter – in this case, Quentin Miller – is what sparked the rapper’s beef in the first place. Mill’s claim that Drake used a ghostwritten verse for his feature on Dreams Worth More Than Money‘s “R.I.C.O.” triggered the feud that has so far resulted in Mill’s “Wanna Know” and “I’m da Plug” as well as Drake’s “Charged Up” and the Grammy-nominated “Back to Back.”
In response to Drake’s line, “I used to want to be on Roc-A-Fella / Then I turned into Jay,” Mill says, “And you claiming you Hov now? Why you state that shit?,” referring to Jay Z’s nickname. Mill then continues, “Man I hate that shit, niggas be talkin’ out they face / But soon as you body somethin’ they be singin’ like they Drake / Wait, niggas dancin’ like they fruitcakes / Hotline Bling, don’t get no bing up in this new Wraith.”
In addition to restarting their feud, Drake also announced on his OVO Sound show that his long-awaited Views From the 6 would arrive in April, with the release date’s month (4/16) sharing the same digits as a Toronto area code (416).
