Watch Taylor Swift Battle Nature in ‘Out of the Woods’ Video
Taylor Swift battles feral wolves, forest fires and avalanches in her new video “Out of the Woods.” The singer premiered the track during Dick Clark’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest.
The video opens with the singer walking on the beach before descending into darker territory. As she wanders through a forest, a pack of wolves attempt to attack her before the singer is transported to more frigid terrain. The rest of the video finds Swift maneuvering through different nature-themed scenarios before the title card “She lost him, but she found herself. And somehow, that was everything” ends the clip.
Swift and her team filmed the video on location in New Zealand, which was not without its risks. During the filming, a severe storm struck, causing trees to fall around them. After evacuating, filming resumed a week later.
“Out of the Woods” was co-written by fun. and Bleachers member Jack Antonoff and was one of the first songs Swift released as a preview of her more synth-pop1989 sound. It was originally not intended to be a single, with Swift telling USA Today last year that the track was released early because “I think it’s the greatest example of the sound of this album.”
Like “Style,” the single is rumored to be about One Direction’s Harry Styles. In her Rolling Stone cover story, the singer-songwriter would not directly reveal the song’s subject but did detail that it was inspired by a romance where “every day was a struggle. Forget making plans for life — we were just trying to make it to next week.”
